Detergent additive against mites

With about 50,000 known species, they are one of the most species-rich group of arachnids, the mites. We encounter them most frequently in everyday life as dust mites. Sniffles with sneezing attacks and reddened eyes torture dust mite allergy sufferers. In the morning and in the evening the complaints are most severe, because the arachnids are particularly numerous in the beds. But animals also suffer from mites. To solve the problem, the use of detergent additives is suitable.

Are mites dangerous for humans and animals?

Mites, especially dust mites, are very small, at only 0.1 to 0.5 millimetres, and are often not visible to the naked eye. Ticks belong to the largest group of mites.

Since mites are very slow animals, several species of them use other means of transport. This enables them to cover greater distances. While they attach themselves to insects, humans or animals, for example, some mites suck into their host and its body fluids.

Some mite species can bite humans and animals. They transmit diseases such as typhus or encephalitis. Some tick bites cause the viral meningitis (FSME), the Crimean-Congo fever or the well-known Lyme disease.

The dust mites leave excrements or even mite parts, which can cause allergic reactions. If left untreated, they are also considered to be a trigger for asthma in humans.

Among other things, dust mites feed on fungi that grow on the skin scales. The food supply in mattresses and bed linen is particularly rich. This is where the parasites multiply en masse. The excrement left behind by the mites contains the allergenic particles, people breathe them in and may become ill.

The so-called grave mite drills passages into the skin of its host. In these passages, it lays its eggs. This process causes severe itching in the affected person. The larvae later hatch from the eggs. These larvae cause scabies in humans and mange in animals. Grass mites are particularly common in dry grasslands. Sitting in the tips of the blades of grass, they wait for humans or animals. The bite of the grass mite is usually not noticed until the following day, by then the host has already scratched a lot and helped the mite to penetrate.

Tips against dust mites

The following tips can significantly reduce the number of dust mites in the domestic environment.

The room temperature in the sleeping area should not exceed 18° C. Humidifiers promote mite infestation. It is better to ventilate your home well and sufficiently by means of airing or draught.

Air conditioners and fan heaters have not proven to be advantageous as they distribute the house dust.

Every 8 to 10 years it is time for a new mattress. This will prevent the mite population from getting out of control. For mattresses, duvets and pillows, mite protection covers can also be obtained (encasings).

When buying duvets and pillows, you should make sure that they are washable.

Pillows, blankets and bed linen should be washed regularly at 60° C. Duvets and pillows every three months, bed linen every 14 days. A detergent additive against mites is recommended for washing.

In bed you should wear nightwear. It absorbs liquid that is produced when you sweat during the night. Furthermore, pyjamas and nightgowns reduce the food supply (meaning the skin scales you lose every day) for the voracious bed mites.

All seating, lying areas and carpets can be treated with mite sprays. The sprays ensure that the skin flakes on the objects change their taste. In this way you deprive the mites of their nutritional basis.

What you can do about grave mites

If your pet suffers from itching, the mange could be behind it. Pustules form on the animal’s ears and eyes. Strong scratching and other negative influences of the mites cornify skin areas and become hairless.

First and foremost, the parasites stay with their host, the pet. Nevertheless, they can pass on to humans. They then trigger the so-called pseudo-scratches. Physical contact with the animal should be avoided as soon as the animal is infested with mites. Stroking and cuddling are taboo for some time.

In addition, if the animal falls ill, you should pay more attention to hygiene in the household. Brushes and combs as well as blankets should be cleaned thoroughly and disposed of if necessary.
