Allergic sniffles with a house dust allergy

A common cold, usually in connection with a cold, is annoying but harmless. Usually such a cold disappears again after about a week. It is not without reason that the vernacular says “a cold comes three days, stays three days and goes three days”.

However, if the nose is permanently blocked or runs permanently and you are plagued by sneezing attacks (especially in the morning), an allergic rhinitis could be present.

Allergic sniffles – often the house dust allergy is the cause

Many people who suffer from a chronic allergic sniffle have the most problems, especially immediately after getting up and in the first hours of the morning. Especially when the sniffle is present all year round and not just a few weeks a year, it is easy to suspect that the person affected is a house dust allergy sufferer. Further alternatives to be excluded would also be an allergy to animal hair or even mould spores.

People who are allergic to house dust have most complaints right after getting up, as they have spent the whole night in a bed full of dust mites and mite faeces, which are the actual causes of a house dust allergy.

This temporal connection can be taken as a good way of distinguishing between an allergy to animal hair or an allergy to mould spores. With the latter two allergies, the symptoms usually occur evenly distributed throughout the day.

The house dust allergy sufferer is often unable to get a good night’s sleep because of the allergy symptoms and chronic sniffle. Exhaustion during the day occurs regularly.

Symptoms of allergic sniffles

In an allergic sniffle there are different symptoms, which can occur simultaneously but also individually. These symptoms are often pronounced to varying degrees. Sneezing fits, a runny nose (caused by thin nasal mucus) or a blocked, swollen nose are signs of an allergic sniffle.

Another symptom of an allergic sniffle is that the person affected often breathes through the mouth because the nose is blocked. Especially at night, people often sleep with their mouth open and breathe through it. This in turn leads to dry mucous membranes and a dry larynx. The susceptibility to other infections, including those of the respiratory tract, is increased. There is a risk of sinus, middle ear and frontal sinusitis.

Risk to respiratory tract

In the case of a prolonged, i.e. chronic allergic sniffle, there is the threat of a so-called “floor change”. In this case, a change of levels means that the allergic sniffle spreads to the respiratory tract. Bronchial asthma threatens.

Help with allergic sniffle

Priority must be given to the treatment of house dust allergy. Mites must be decimated and mite faeces must be removed as much as possible. The amount of house dust in the bedroom must be kept as low as possible. Those who do not like to dust every day should buy an air purifier with a Hepa filter. These clean the air reliably from allergens and house dust.

Medicines for allergic rhinitis / sniffles

There is a whole range of remedies that help with chronic allergic sniffles. Classic remedies for allergies, such as cetirizine or loratadine, are available without a prescription in every pharmacy.

In the meantime, there are also good remedies on the market that work directly in the nose against the allergy symptoms. Eye drops for reddened and itchy eyes (e.g. Allergodil) have also become very effective.

Important: Talk to your doctor before taking medicine.
