Anyone who is allergic to house dust has a big problem with house mites, or house dust mites. The allergy to house dust, or rather to house dust mites, follows you at every turn. It is, after pollen allergy, the second most common allergy.

It is triggered by mite excrement, i.e. the excrements of the house mites. We will examine the subject in more detail:

3d Render mites | © panthermedia.net / 3dmentat

What are (house dust) mites?

Mites (Latin: Pyroglyphidae) are among the arachnids. Contrary to popular opinion, arachnids are not only what we understand by spiders in the conventional sense. They are the eight-legged creatures that mostly weave webs and lurk for prey. Instead, scorpions, mites, ticks and daddy-long-legs also belong to the arachnids.

Description of house mites

The house mite (Dermatophagoides) now also belongs to the arachnids as a genus of mites. In fact, however, there is not one house dust mite, but there are approximately 50 known representatives of the mite, of which a dozen live in house dust (source: Wikipedia).

For Europe the most common house dust mites are these three:

Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

Dermatophagoides farinae

Dermatophagoides microceras

Size and appearance

Especially the first two mite species make life difficult for people in Europe. In one gram of dust live several thousand, up to about 15,000 house dust mites. At just 0.1 millimetres to a maximum of 0.5 millimetres in size, they are not visible to the naked eye. Under the microscope, on the other hand, the mites and their characteristic jaw claws are clearly visible.

Lifetime

The average life expectancy of house mites is about one month. However, under particularly good conditions, they can reach more than three times this age, namely up to 100 days.

Nutrition

House mites feed mainly on skin scales. A healthy person loses about 2 grams of skin flakes per day. That is, in relation to a mite population, enough for hundreds of thousands to millions of mites. A small part of the diet is also made up of moulds, which are needed for the predigestion of skin scales.

Habitat

With very few known exceptions (e.g. bird nests), the outdoor environment is hostile to the mite. For this reason, house mites are mainly found in human dwellings. The visit by humans alone is enough to repopulate a flat. Usually there are always mites that are carried off with clothing.

Since house dust mites prefer higher humidity (70-80% relative humidity depending on the species) and heat (25-30 degrees Celsius), the preferred habitat of the house dust mite within the apartment is the bed, or more precisely the mattress, pillow and duvet. Often up to 1.5 million house mites are found in a single mattress.

It is important to know that the house mites can also be found in other places: long-pile carpets and couch sets made of upholstery fabric are mentioned here.

Allergy triggers

The house dust mite itself rarely causes allergies. It does not bite or spray poison. The allergic reaction comes from the mites’ faeces, which contain proteins, and from the eggs. A single mite produces around 200 times its own weight in faeces in its short life. If you now imagine that there are more than 1 million mites living in a mattress, you can imagine the amount of mite faeces found in a mattress.

The excrement of the house dust mite decomposes into the smallest dust particles as soon as it is dried. These particles combine with the house dust and swirl through the air. If an allergy sufferer breathes in these particles in the normal way, the typical reactions occur. The nose feels “closed”, the eyes are reddened and you feel a sneezing sensation.

Anyone who does not consistently tackle this house dust allergy, and especially the house mites, runs the risk that the simple allergy will also affect the lungs. This is usually referred to as allergic asthma and the transition of the allergy to the bronchial tubes is called “floor change”.

Summary

Inconspicuously small and invisible to the eye, the house dust mite itself is actually harmless. However, the mite’s faeces can cause severe allergies and allergic asthma. So read our advice pages to find out what you can do about the house dust mite.

Vermin in bed – there’s hardly anything more disgusting. Within your own four walls you would like to feel as comfortable as possible. This is especially true for the bed. This is where we stay when we are tired and want to relax. The thought of crawling vermin, however, barely makes our eyes close. Most people do not even know that the smallest creatures are in our beds day after day. Mites and house dust mites also leave behind their dirt, to which many people react allergically.

Here are the five most interesting facts including helpful links to the sleeping chamber and vermin:

Each person swallows 50 spiders in a lifetime?

The rumour persists that each person swallows around 50 spiders in the course of his or her life. Some people find spiders fascinating, but a large proportion suffer from a real arachnophobia or at least do not want to have them in their own bed. But the numbers that circulate are not stable. Experts suggest that swallowing a spider is actually an unlikely event. People rarely sleep with their mouths open and the natural reflex when something falls into the mouth is more likely to be spitting rather than swallowing.

Mites and mite faeces in bed

Up to 2 million mites can romp around in one bed. Incredible numbers. But mites and mite faeces in bed have long been proven. The less you pay attention to hygiene, the more mites and mite excrement you will find in your own bed. They are among the most common parasites that infest our homes. Among other things, mite-proof covers and regular cleaning help here. Airing is also important in this case!

Mosquitoes in the bedroom: they even survive the winter

Especially in summer they are unfortunately a part of it: The mosquitoes. But not only outside, but especially where people are, they like to romp around, because they are blood-sucking parasites. Even a very cold winter does little harm to the mosquitoes. They love cool and humid places the most, that is where they retreat. Precipitation and warm temperatures in spring favour the development of the eggs into adult mosquitoes, which then survive much longer even in such conditions.

When you wake up with a bite

Bites can come from a wide variety of plagues. However, the fact is that mosquito bites are the most common, and flea and bug bites can also be a possibility. The latter two parasites are somewhat more difficult to control. Fleas are usually dragged into the apartment by pets. So if you have pets and wake up in the morning with bites, you should investigate this. Bedbugs are often dragged in from abroad, for example with old furniture.

Bedbugs, the bed pests

It is not uncommon for bedbugs to be brought from a hotel abroad to your own home. Such animals are very sophisticated and must be fought where they are found. It is also important to prevent bedbugs from spreading and multiplying. Mattresses and covers and also the whole environment must be vacuumed and hot washed. Bedbug infestation can be recognized by the stings and skin residue as well as faeces or bedbug eggs. There are many more countermeasures.

Neem oil is often praised as a particularly effective remedy against house dust mites. We enlighten.

In India the neem tree is called the bountiful tree (Azad Darakhti Hindi). It originally comes from Burma (it is estimated that it has been there for 40-50 million years) and then spread, mainly through targeted planting / reforestation, also in Africa, America and the Caribbean.

The Niembaum flowers from January to the end of April and gets by with very little water per year (about 400 ml). However, the tree does not like humidity and frost either.

The positive properties of the leaves, bark and oils can be used for many things. Neem oil is also very effective against mites.

Mite sprays in mattresses for children?

House dust mites, or bed mites, often trigger a mite allergy. They do not stop at babies and children. If the child already has a runny nose in the morning, sneezes and/or has a cough that gets better during the day, then a bed mite allergy may be present.

The uninvited guests feed on human skin scales, among other things. Since they love high humidity and also like warm temperatures from 25 °C upwards, they are found in mattresses in extraordinarily large numbers. The mites do not even stop at baby mattresses or children’s mattresses.

Covers for the mattress

Of course, you can use special protective covers that are so finely woven that they do not let allergens through. This prevents the mites from being able to feed on human skin scales. The disadvantage is that the dead mites and the mite excrement remain in the mattress if it has not already been covered with a brand new cover.

Neem oil against mites

There are various sprays and oils on the market as a further means of fighting mites, which are produced from the seeds of the Indian neem tree.

Products from the Neem tree, as well as the corresponding oil, contain hundreds of active ingredients, some of which have not yet been properly researched.

However, one of the researched substances is particularly interesting. This substance is called azadirachtin and is used for mite sprays and oils, as this substance acts directly against the mites. Mites that ingest this substance during feeding become unable to reproduce. The active ingredient azadirachtin interferes with the synthesis of chitin by the mites. Without chitin, the larva cannot skin and pupate and dies.

Neem oil therefore prevents the mites from reproducing !

Disadvantages of neem oil

Unfortunately, oil is not a miracle weapon against dust mites either. The following things you have to know about Neem oil:

Neem oil does not smell pleasant the excrements (faeces) of the mites remain in the mattress as allergy trigger

Neem oil does not penetrate to the middle of the mattress

many people react allergic to the ingredients

the application has to be repeated every three months

Conclusion on neem oil

The anti-mite remedy “Neem oil” is not a miracle cure and does not remove house dust mites. Before using it, it is important to check whether the person sleeping on the mattress is allergic to the Neem spray or oil.

Especially for children and babies, we do not recommend the use of Neem Oil products because of the almost 100 different substances that are often contained in Neem Oil products. It is better to use the many alternatives, such as mattress covers (encasings) and air purifiers.

However, Neem Oil is definitely justified as an additional remedy for mites in adults.

Sneezing, coughing, burning eyes

As with other allergies, the symptoms of a house dust allergy vary from person to person. While some people only have mild symptoms, others often struggle with real health problems.

The mild symptoms include reddened and itchy eyes, a runny nose or even violent sneezing fits. By the way, these symptoms occur especially in the morning, immediately after waking up. Why this is so, you can read below.

Severe symptoms like asthma and shortness of breath

An untreated house dust allergy can cause a so-called floor change. This is a big problem, because it means that the allergy spreads from the head area (eyes and nose) to the respiratory tract and the bronchi. The affected house dust allergy sufferer then suffers from shortness of breath, asthma and bronchial cough. Strong sputum often occurs, also especially in the morning.

The fight against the cause is difficult

As you can read in this article about house dust allergy, house dust mites and their excrements are the cause of the corresponding allergy. The allergy sufferer reacts allergic to the house dust mites, but also to the mites’ faeces to the highest degree. This combines with the house dust when it dries and decomposes. These fine dust particles, which now contain the protein of the faeces, are inhaled by every person in the household. While normal, healthy people do not react allergic to them, the house dust allergy sufferer reacts immediately to the proteins.

Home remedies and medicines

Especially people who only show slight symptoms of a house dust allergy could rely on natural remedies and old household remedies. A number of remedies are good for allergies and relieve the symptoms.

Nettle

You can make a tea from fresh nettle leaves. On the one hand, this is very good for preventing allergic reactions, on the other hand, symptoms such as irritated mucous membranes or itching can be relieved.

Sea salt

A bath in sea salt, preferably from the Dead Sea, relieves itching and rashes. Appropriate baths are now available in almost every drugstore and in many pharmacies. You can also buy sea salt for such baths over the Internet (see below).

Eyebright herb

Eyebright herb can be used to make a wonderful tea that helps against itching and red eyes. Simply let the tea cool down and soak a cotton pad with it. Carefully place it on the eyes and dab around the eyes. Eyebright herb is a real relief for itchy eyes. By the way, eyebright herb is also available as finished eye drops and is then known as Euphrasia.

Butterbur

The butterbur is no longer so well-known in Germany. However, it is able to relieve cramps in the respiratory tract. It is also used very successfully against hay fever. So if you are allergic to house dust and suffer from shortness of breath or asthma, butterbur may be suitable for you. Butterbur is available as capsules on the Internet or from your pharmacy.

Inhalation

To clear the nose and also to flush the allergens out of the nose, it can make sense to inhale once or twice a day. We recommend inhaling at least once a day before going to bed. Look around in drugstores or pharmacies. There are many inhalers that will help. For example pinimenthol or Japan oil.

Drugs Antihistamines

Allergy sufferers who need a stronger remedy for the agonizing itching and allergy can take an antihistamine. These are freely available and can be bought in online pharmacies. As these often have first-class offers especially for new customers, we recommend this website for price comparison.

Nasal sprays

In the meantime, there are not only nasal sprays that merely reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa, but also agents with active ingredients against inflammatory reactions. These agents are related to cortisone and help very well. Unfortunately they are not suitable for a longer period of time. For a short period of time, however, they help very well and you should use them calmly if you suffer extremely again.

Apart from the bedroom, where you normally spend 6-8 hours a day, the living room is probably the room that you cannot and do not want to do without during the day and in the evening. Usually several hours are spent here every day. Often at the TV or in a sociable round. Depending on the furnishings and atmosphere of the living room, this room can also be a place of relaxation and retreat.

Due to the fact that the living room is the centre of your life and the many hours spent there, it is important that you have a pleasant climate there.

For most people, the living room should provide a cosy atmosphere and warm temperatures, especially in winter, which is why it is not unusual for the heating to run at full speed.

The warm and dry room air then creates a room climate that dries out the mucous membranes. This is often noticed by dry and burning eyes.

Particularly in winter, it is therefore important to ensure not only sufficient oxygen content in the living room, but also a decent level of humidity. Since the air dries out during the day, you should help with a humidifier, as you can read on this page.

Requirements for humidifiers

In the humidifier test on the linked page, both the general properties and the requirements of the respective rooms are discussed. Especially in the evening hours it is important that the room air has a high quality. Already tired from everyday life, the eyes often start to burn and itch even faster.

Especially in the living room, however, the noise level should remain low. No matter whether you are talking to friends / family, reading a book or watching TV – a disturbing background noise is not desired. Therefore, it is advisable that you deal with the different technologies and thus find the model that meets your requirements. In addition to the different techniques of increasing humidity, models with other features are also available. These are variable according to personal ideas and directly determine the budget that can be spent on a humidifier.

Very simple models are offered starting at 30 Euro. Depending on the room temperature, the tendency here is towards an evaporator or an atomizer. If a small, additional heat source is not a problem, an evaporator may also be appropriate for you. Other requirements for humidifiers are maintenance and cleaning. The more extensive these requirements are, the less the device in question can be described as suitable for everyday use. After all, nobody really wants to service such a device on a daily basis.

Selecting the optimum location

There are many reasons to choose a particular humidifier. Nevertheless, general and personal requirements must always be taken into account. Depending on the living room and model, the ideal location may look different. For example, make sure that the air coming out of the unit is not directed directly towards the couch. Otherwise, there is a risk of colds and a “stiff neck”.

With a good appliance, the noise level should be adjustable. In most cases, the change in noise level is caused by the change in power level. It is therefore particularly important to choose a device that is still sufficiently quiet even at higher power levels and is therefore suitable for use in the living room from the ground up.

Conclusion

Especially people with health problems should inform themselves about the possibilities of a humidifier. Air enriched with moisture can often support recovery. It is important to take your time when choosing a humidifier and to consider the different types. This is the only way to find the ideal device for your living room.

One final tip: By airing the unit briefly and regularly, you can also reenrich the used air with oxygen.

The endocannabinoids are produced by the human body itself. This fact has been known since the 1990s. Little research has been done on what they are used for. Laboratory experiments on mice have shown that the body’s own cannabis-like messenger substances have the anti-inflammatory effect. CBD is therefore becoming more and more known and popular these days. The cannabis-like messenger substances dock to the body exactly where THC docks as an active ingredient in cannabis. The defence reactions of the skin can be regulated with the cannabinoid docking sites. The CBD in marijuana is also its cannabinoid.

What is important for the body with CBD?

For the production of cannabis oil the hemp seeds are an important raw material. In experiments with animals, it was found that nickel allergies are shown when the cannabinoid docking sites are missing. The messenger substances were so often not recognized. If animals have the increased endocannabinoid level, they fight less often with the skin allergy. If the THC solution was brushed directly onto the skin in the animals, then there were fewer symptoms of the allergy.

The scientists therefore produced cannabis ointments, which are used for allergic eczema and for the treatment of contact allergies. Since the dosage of CBD is low, the intoxicating effect is not to be expected. CBD in cannabis oil is therefore effective for skin eczema and this is very good news for many people affected. In principle, this is not a new finding, because such an ointment was already available in pharmacies in the 1930s.

Cannabis extracts have been known for their healing effects for many centuries. One example is the anti-inflammatory effect. The ointment had disappeared from the shelves again, which was due to the ban on marijuana and also to the intoxicating effect of THC (source: https://hanfverband.de/inhalte/cannabis-wirkung-nebenwirkungen-und-risiken). Nowadays, patients fight for cannabis to become medicinal again.

Important information about cannabis

According to studies, cannabis is not only effective against skin eczema, but also stimulates the appetite. This is important for anorexic patients, AIDS patients or patients undergoing chemotherapy. CBD is also effective against allergies and this in the form of liquid, drops or oil. Although the effect of CBD has not been fully researched, it is hoped that it will have pleasing effects. The mechanism of action of cannabidiol has already been described in the literature.

Compared to THC, CBD does not have a psychoactive effect and thus does not cause a change in consciousness. The effect of THC has nothing to do with the state of intoxication. With CBD the effects promise a multiple therapeutic benefit. CBD or also cannabidiol is not yet completely transparent regarding its effects. The current state of knowledge only allows conclusions about possible areas of application. Cannabis could, however, help with various ailments and diseases and these are AIDS, drug addiction, skin diseases, ADHD, autism, asthma, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, anxiety, dementia, multiple sclerosis and pathological stress.

Also possible for CBD is the fight against cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, firomyalgia, epilepsy, diabetes, depression, Crohn’s disease, cancer and bipolar disorder. Pious must be mentioned BSE, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, obesity, motion sickness and migraine.

Especially in connection with spending the night in strange beds, for example in a hotel, the fear of an infection with scabies is quite justified. Despite high hygienic standards, this disease has not been eradicated. But those who know the causes and background of the parasite infestation can better prevent infection.

What is scabies?

Scabies is also known as scabies and describes a disease of the human skin, as you can read in the Scabies Guide. The disease is caused by certain parasites. So-called scabies mites attack the upper layer of skin and dig into the skin with the help of small forceps. There they form tiny ducts where they can effectively protect themselves from various environmental influences. In this way, the tiny animals can even hide in chlorinated water when taking a bath or swimming. The disease occurs particularly frequently in the area of the toes and fingers, but many other areas of the human body can also be affected. Among others, the area of the armpits as well as the genital area have a particularly attractive effect on the parasites. One of the reasons for this is that these areas are shielded from the environment due to their location, thus protecting the animals. In very young children, scabies can occur all over the body and on the palms of the hands.

These symptoms are associated with scabies

Above all, severe itching with subsequent reddening of the skin is a clear indication of infestation by scabies mites. If you look closely, you can also see small nodules under the skin – these are about the size of a pinhead. These bulges are the above-mentioned mite ducts. By the way, the colloquial name scabies is due to the strong itching, which neither adults nor children can resist without medication. The diagnosis is not only made on the basis of the itching and redness, but also by detecting the mite eggs. Usually a tiny part of the skin is scratched off and examined under a microscope. If excrement balls or eggs are seen here, the diagnosis is certain: scabies.

Causes of scabies

Scabies is transmissible from person to person. This usually requires direct skin contact; in rare cases scabies is transmitted without contact. The mites need a lot of time to transfer to a new host. For this reason, it is usually not a problem if there has been brief and superficial contact with a person suffering from scabies. Very short touches are usually not sufficient to become infected. However, one cannot be sure, which is why the contact should be prevented if possible. Especially between parents and children as well as between educators and children scabies is transmitted quite quickly, as regular cuddling and hugging is a high risk factor. In general, scabies mites can only survive for a very short time without a suitable host. For this reason, discarded clothing or used towels only represent a very low risk of infection. However, even today many people still get infected with scabies because they have slept in a hotel bed. So, unless there is too much time between contamination and direct contact with a new host, the parasites can survive.

These factors favour the infection

In general, the worse the hygiene, the higher the risk of infection. For this reason, particularly cheap or unkempt accommodation always poses a high risk. Even a weak immune system can contribute to the development of scabies. This is especially true during a cold, in small children or in people with AIDS. Unfortunately, scabies also occurs in hospitals, as many people stay here in a small space. If you want to reduce the risk of contracting scabies, you should practice good personal hygiene and avoid staying in busy places.

Between May and October the grass mites romp in the grass, moss and undergrowth every year. There are many different species in the grass mite category. For humans and dogs, the autumn grass mite is the most interesting species in this country, although there are other mites in dogs. The autumn grass mite, uses both humans and dogs as hosts and can be quite annoying. Let’s look at the most important facts about the grass mite, as the autumn grass mite is also called, and understand why it can be so dangerous for the dog.

1. appearance, occurrence and distribution

The autumn grass mite is an arachnid, just like the house dust mite and tick. It is only about 0.5 millimetres in size and has a strong reddish colour. Just like ticks, the small animals move by running away. They have a total of six legs. In their life they go through three (five) stages. From the egg, which is laid on the ground by the mother, they develop into larvae. In this stage the autumn grass mites migrate to low grass blades, mosses and other branches. From here, they reach their host simply by stripping off. The actual targets include small animals such as mice and birds. Because autumn grass mite larvae are not fussy, they go for all other mammals such as dogs, cats, humans and rabbits.

2. what do autumn grass mites do to their host?

The larvae sit there to scratch the skin on their legs with their cutting tools, they look for a very thin place to do this. They drip saliva into the crack. The saliva dissolves the skin. This mixture of skin and lymph is their food. When they have finished sucking, they fall off. They pass through the Nymph Stadium, which is actually three Nymph Stadiums. Once developed, they fall off as adult grass mites.

3. autumn grass mites are a danger for dogs

Depending on the host, grass mites and other dog mites linger on the skin from a few hours to days.

Regardless of the host, saliva and injured skin areas lead to itching. While humans can hold back from scratching the area, dogs cannot. They lick the irritated skin area wound and scratch it open.

Because the skin barrier is broken, pathogenic germs and bacteria can now enter the bloodstream directly. Especially sick, very young and weakened animals can suffer serious damage in this way.

Furthermore, these open areas become inflamed and can also cause dermatitis. This means that not only the bite/scribe itself is irritated, but also other large areas of skin are affected by itching.

In long-haired dogs, mites are difficult to detect, and although it may be that the change of coat causes the scratching at the beginning and end of the season, mites are not the first diagnosis. This is problematic, because scratching can cause lasting damage to hair follicles in such a way that permanent bald spots appear. If treated in time, the circles of bald spots (alopecia) disappear again.

In the worst case, the saliva can trigger a kind of allergic reaction ranging from cramps to nausea and unconsciousness. It is therefore important to check regularly whether the dog is infested by a parasite.

In addition to the autumn grass mites, dogs can also be infested by ear mites. In this case, it is essential to act quickly, because your dog’s hearing can actually be affected. Besides, the dog suffers terribly from the parasites.

By the way: autumn grass mites can also infest cats.

4. remedy against autumn grass mites

You can easily recognize the parasite infestation if you regularly look behind the ears, in the facial area under the belly and on the paws for conspicuous features.

If your dog itches more frequently, try a thorough shower and very mild shampoo or curd soap.

If this does not help, consult a vet. Your vet will also prescribe something for your dog’s itching.

Tip: Grease cream on the paws and leg area and adhesive tape around the harness or neck can greatly reduce the infestation. Coconut oil is also an alternative.

Especially in spring and summer, allergies can be overwhelming and make life incredibly uncomfortable. There is a high probability that you or someone you know suffers from seasonal allergies, house dust allergies, or food allergies. Most people who are struggling with an allergy go to the doctor for treatment and routinely receive medications ranging from acetaminophen to antihistamines. Both can suppress the allergy symptoms in the short term, but they do not help for long and can make the situation even worse. Fortunately, allergy sufferers can find some remedies among natural remedies that provide relief in a natural way.

Natural home remedies

Many people swear by the soothing effect of apple vinegar on allergy symptoms, as it can reduce the production of mucus and cleanse the lymphatic system. Swallow at least one tablespoon of apple vinegar a day or add one tablespoon of apple vinegar to a cup of hot water with honey.

The Asian Reishi mushroom, also called Ling Zhi in Chinese, is a Far Eastern allergy remedy that the Chinese swear by. Similar to cortisone, the Reishi mushroom has an anti-inflammatory effect, which is due to the triterpenes contained in the mushroom. Reishi mushrooms are excellent in soups or stews. They are also available in dried form.

Sports

Yes, the last thing you probably want to do when you feel uncomfortable is exercise. However, researchers in Thailand found that moderate to intensive activity for just 30 minutes can provide significant relief from allergies. The hypothesis is that this relief occurs because physical activity causes an anti-inflammatory effect in your nasal passages, which naturally reduces allergy symptoms. If you have extremely high pollen levels, an indoor workout is likely to be more beneficial because it reduces re-exposure.

Local honey

Allergy symptoms are the reaction of your body to a substance that it classifies as harmful to your health. The runny nose, mucus and watery eyes are your body’s attempt to flush the foreign substances out of your system. Unfortunately, you cannot simply tell your body that grass and pollen are not bad. But you can help your body learn that the local habitat is not dangerous. You do this by introducing your body to small doses of grass and pollen that only irritate it minimally. This is where the local honey comes in. Bees create their honey from the surrounding area. Their honey therefore contains traces of the pollen to which your body reacts.

While the daily intake of one tablespoon of honey does not immediately relieve your allergy symptoms, it can of course help to reduce your allergy symptoms (see allergic rhinitis in house dust allergy) over time. Like honey, bee pollen also contains the natural substances in which bees live. Sprinkled on fruit or salad, it provides a light, sweet crunch.

Neti pot, saline rinse and nasal sprays

Your nasal passage is an ingenious system of countless tiny passages. For most of us, these passages are full of nooks and crannies where dirt and pollen can easily be trapped. Until this foreign matter is removed, your body will most likely continue to try to remove it from your system. This can cause a runny nose, coughing, sneezing and watery eyes. With a so-called neti pot, you can use saline solution to flush your nasal passages and relieve your allergy symptoms. Not sure if you want to pour liquid into your nose? You are not alone in this. Neti pots are not for everyone. A nasal spray is an alternative. By injecting saline solution into your nose once a day, you can flush the same harmful irritants out of your nasal passage.

Probiotics

In some cases, allergy symptoms are due to the fact that your body’s immune system is unbalanced. This can cause you to react more strongly to foreign stimuli such as pollen, dust and grass. Probiotics give your immune system a boost by introducing beneficial bacteria into your digestive tract. A good source of probiotics can be found in fermented foods like kimchi. Kombucha is another source of probiotics. Both are delicious supplements to almost any meal.

We need a pillow to sleep well. Sounds simple at first. But not all pillows are the same. It’s the stuffing that makes it different. There’s goose feathers, styrofoam, microfiber, soft feathers, viscose. Visco is made of cellulose and means that the head does not sink into the pillow but is carried. Depending on the shape of the head and the pillow goes with it when we move. So it is held well and we don’t get any tension in our neck when lying down and sleeping. These are the differences of the pillows in size, filling and length. Therefore you should always pay attention to what you buy. There are actually no alternatives. Unless you have to wear a neck brace. The pillows are used for sleep and relaxation.

The right sleeping position

The sleeping position determines the right pillow. 80 times 80 is the best filling length. Feathers and down provide a soft surface and form a material that feels good and always returns to its original position.
As a back sleeper, you should use a pillow that is not too high and for this purpose a flat pillow is sufficient to keep the head horizontal and support the cervical vertebrae. It is important anyway with all pillows that this vertebra is particularly well supported. Especially for those who have a hunched back, these pillows are especially optimal and are a very good form and variant.

The filling

The filling wadding is microfibre or similar quality, but on a simple level it does not do anything. Because for a pillow it is important that it bulges again with every movement of the head, so that it gets into a perfect and professional position. However, filling with cotton wool is very correct when you need a cuddly pillow that you can sink into, that is very soft and can be easily shaped and compressed. A perfect way to sleep is always provided with this.

The natural filling is made of spelt and millet and offers a wonderful feeling of lying down. However, these are grains that you can feel or hear when the pillow moves. The massage effect of the pillows also perfectly promotes the whole blood circulation of the body. However, the materials are natural and do not help much with supports or neck problems. Other cushions must be used for this. Furthermore, the bulk density bulges the pillow. Here it is important that the belly sleeper needs 70 percent down, the side sleeper also. However, the distance between head and mattress must be bridged very precisely. The back sleeper needs 50% and a hard mattress for his sleep so that he can lie optimally.

It is important for allergy sufferers and especially those allergic to house dust that the filling does not cause any problems. We therefore recommend a pillow that transports sweat away well and is washable. Synthetics have proven to be very effective here. For an allergy-free night we also recommend so-called encasings.

The pillows in the pillow test must be designed for good night-time exposure. Thus down and feathers must not be stressed too much. There must not be any loss of filling power. In this case, a new pillow will not help, but at most a new pillow. The pillows are therefore assigned according to the type of lying, whereby it is particularly important for the abdominal sleeper to pay attention to the arms and their lying position in relation to the mattress and to be able to adjust accordingly. This is provided by the filling, length and width of the pillows. For the abdominal sleeper it is especially important to shape the pillow as desired. Arms and legs are always properly supported.
