It is triggered by mite excrement, i.e. the excrements of the house mites. We will examine the subject in more detail:

What are (house dust) mites?

Mites (Latin: Pyroglyphidae) are among the arachnids. Contrary to popular opinion, arachnids are not only what we understand by spiders in the conventional sense. They are the eight-legged creatures that mostly weave webs and lurk for prey. Instead, scorpions, mites, ticks and daddy-long-legs also belong to the arachnids.

Description of house mites

The house mite (Dermatophagoides) now also belongs to the arachnids as a genus of mites. In fact, however, there is not one house dust mite, but there are approximately 50 known representatives of the mite, of which a dozen live in house dust (source: Wikipedia).

For Europe the most common house dust mites are these three:

Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus

Dermatophagoides farinae

Dermatophagoides microceras

Size and appearance

Especially the first two mite species make life difficult for people in Europe. In one gram of dust live several thousand, up to about 15,000 house dust mites. At just 0.1 millimetres to a maximum of 0.5 millimetres in size, they are not visible to the naked eye. Under the microscope, on the other hand, the mites and their characteristic jaw claws are clearly visible.

Lifetime

The average life expectancy of house mites is about one month. However, under particularly good conditions, they can reach more than three times this age, namely up to 100 days.

Nutrition

House mites feed mainly on skin scales. A healthy person loses about 2 grams of skin flakes per day. That is, in relation to a mite population, enough for hundreds of thousands to millions of mites. A small part of the diet is also made up of moulds, which are needed for the predigestion of skin scales.

Habitat

With very few known exceptions (e.g. bird nests), the outdoor environment is hostile to the mite. For this reason, house mites are mainly found in human dwellings. The visit by humans alone is enough to repopulate a flat. Usually there are always mites that are carried off with clothing.

Since house dust mites prefer higher humidity (70-80% relative humidity depending on the species) and heat (25-30 degrees Celsius), the preferred habitat of the house dust mite within the apartment is the bed, or more precisely the mattress, pillow and duvet. Often up to 1.5 million house mites are found in a single mattress.

It is important to know that the house mites can also be found in other places: long-pile carpets and couch sets made of upholstery fabric are mentioned here.

Allergy triggers

The house dust mite itself rarely causes allergies. It does not bite or spray poison. The allergic reaction comes from the mites’ faeces, which contain proteins, and from the eggs. A single mite produces around 200 times its own weight in faeces in its short life. If you now imagine that there are more than 1 million mites living in a mattress, you can imagine the amount of mite faeces found in a mattress.

The excrement of the house dust mite decomposes into the smallest dust particles as soon as it is dried. These particles combine with the house dust and swirl through the air. If an allergy sufferer breathes in these particles in the normal way, the typical reactions occur. The nose feels “closed”, the eyes are reddened and you feel a sneezing sensation.

Anyone who does not consistently tackle this house dust allergy, and especially the house mites, runs the risk that the simple allergy will also affect the lungs. This is usually referred to as allergic asthma and the transition of the allergy to the bronchial tubes is called “floor change”.

Summary

Inconspicuously small and invisible to the eye, the house dust mite itself is actually harmless. However, the mite’s faeces can cause severe allergies and allergic asthma. So read our advice pages to find out what you can do about the house dust mite.

Treat mites in dogs

Mites can catch our four-legged darlings in different ways, because arachnids are very common. Mostly the infestation occurs during a walk, where the small critters lurk on various plants. But there is also danger in the garden, and eventually other animals can also act as carriers.

Actually, no dog is spared, some species do not cause any problems at all, so that the infestation is not noticeable at all. However, dog owners should know how to recognise mite infestation and what appropriate treatment is needed. In addition, there are also a few tips on how mites can be prevented.

Identifying different types of mites in dogs

Not all mites are the same, there are many different types of parasites, in dogs the hair follicle mites, the grass mites, the mange mites and the ear mites are among the most important.

Hair follicle mites

The hair follicles of dogs usually contain hair follicle mites as early as puppyhood, as they often pass from the mother to her young. Often, however, they do not cause any symptoms, and only when a weakened immune system causes them to multiply excessively can symptoms appear. Mostly, an infestation is noticeable in hairless parts of the body, this mainly affects the head and neck, sometimes also the limbs and the trunk. Often the skin is somewhat reddened and scaly, as bacteria like to settle there, itching can occur.

Grass mites

Grass mites can only infest dogs when they are in the larval stage. The parasites spread from grass to animals and can also be transmitted to cats and humans. Since the animals suck lymphatic fluid instead of blood, no pathogens can be transmitted. These mites are mainly found on the paws and legs, they like to sit between the toes. However, there can also be an infestation on the stomach, ears, lips or the bridge of the nose. The dog suffers from extreme itching, in some animals also wheals form on the skin and the eyes swell up.

Digger mites / mange mites

Grave mites belong to the group of mange mites, but sometimes hair follicle mites also cause mange, provided the animal is severely weakened. Grave mites usually pass from one dog to the other, not even direct contact with fur is necessary. The females of the tiny parasites lay their eggs under the dog’s skin after digging themselves into it. Dogs suffer very much from the infestation, because the itching is almost unbearable, constant scratching can be observed. Usually the parasites are found on the head, mostly in the ears, on the eyes and on the bridge of the nose. Often scales, small lumps or pustules are also visible on the skin, the skin becomes increasingly thicker, sometimes a rancid smell can be perceived. If the mange spreads too much and is not treated in time, the animal can even die.

Ear mites

Ear mites are mainly found in puppies, older animals suffer extremely rarely from such an infestation. The parasites are transmitted by direct body contact, the infestation is easily recognized by a crumbly, brownish secretion in the ears. The skin can be very inflamed and itchy, fortunately these mites rarely spread to other parts of the body.

The treatment of mite infestation in dogs

Since there are different types of mites, the treatment can also be quite different. With grass mites, the dog suffers from itching, but the parasites usually disappear again without help. In specialist shops you can find special shampoos that work against parasites, but you can also try out products that work against fleas and ticks. If the itching is very severe, the vet can prescribe tablets or an ointment against it.

If you suspect ear mites, you should always go to the vet immediately. First of all, the vet will thoroughly clean the ears, then he will drip an agent into the ear canal which not only kills mites but also has an antibacterial effect. These emulsions usually contain a pesticide, antibiotic and cortisone. The treatment should be continued for two to three weeks so that all mites are really killed.

If there is an infestation with hair follicle mites, sometimes a self-healing process occurs within eight weeks. So-called acaricides can be applied externally, and in most cases the doctor will additionally treat the patient with antibiotics to prevent a secondary infection by bacteria. If hair follicle mites occur in puppies, the mother is treated at the same time, even if she has no symptoms. In principle, dog owners should be aware of a

In principle, dog owners should make sure that the immune system is strengthened so that the therapy is successful.

An acaricide is also used in the case of an infestation with grave mites. It is important that all accessories such as collars, blankets and brushes are carefully cleaned so that no new infestation occurs. The treatment usually only takes place externally; the treatment period is six to eight weeks. If it is a long-haired animal, the coat is often shorn before the treatment begins, then crusts can also be removed more easily. In case of an infestation with grave mites it would be very important to find out the source of infection. Possibly this can be found at a breeder, at shows, at the dog groomer or with animals from the circle of acquaintances.

prevent mites

Prevention in dogs has proven to be difficult. Nevertheless, there are a few remedies that help quite well, even if they are no guarantee to stay mite-free.

First of all, it should be mentioned that there are spot-ons that you drop on the neck of your dog. Similar to what you might do with flea infestation.

There is also the possibility of mixing black seed oil into the food. The rule of thumb for dosing the oil in mites is 1 mg per kg of the dog for control. If you only want to prevent, add only about 10 drops to the food.

Important: tea tree oil is recommended again and again for use against mites in dogs. We can only advise against this. On the one hand the dog can get severe allergies (just like us humans). On the other hand, there is not yet enough information on how dogs metabolise the oil at all.

Mites are one of the most common parasites that infect cats from time to time. The cat is the ideal host for these little animals, because the cat’s fur is nice and warm and damp. There are five different types of mites in cats, namely ear mites, hair follicle mites, mange mites, predatory mites and autumn grass mites.

Especially if cat owners notice constant itching in their four-legged friends, they should check whether there is a possible mite infestation.

Ear mites

Ear mites are most common in cats, if mites have accumulated in the ear, this is also called ear ruffles. As the name suggests, these parasites only settle in the ear, namely in the auricle and the auditory canal. Since these mites are active all year round, infestation does not occur during a particular season. Especially outdoor workers are often affected, because the transmission is mainly through other animals.

Symptoms

Severe itching is the first symptom of ear mite infestation. Cat owners are often surprised that their pet constantly shakes its head or holds its head at an angle. It is not uncommon to scratch the ears until there are bloody spots. Sometimes it also happens that the animals turn in circles in a very confused way, this is also called manege movement. At some point, however, the infestation with ear mites also becomes visible, a crumbly, black substance can be seen in the ear.

Treatment

If there is any suspicion, a veterinarian should check the ears of the cat. If the diagnosis is confirmed, the ears are thoroughly cleaned, then a special preparation against mites is administered, the treatment must then be continued at home for a certain period of time. Since ear mites are very persistent and can survive temporarily without a host, the animal’s environment should be carefully cleaned. If there are other animals living in the household, they should also be treated.

autumn mites / grass mites

The autumn mite (also known as autumn grass mite or simply grass mite) is widespread throughout the world. In Europe you have to expect these parasites between July and October. Basically, these orange-red animals live on the ground, but they lurk on grass stalks for a host, so that especially free-roaming animals are endangered.

Symptoms

Also an infestation with autumn mites or grass mites is initially noticeable by itching, so the cat scratches itself constantly. Although these parasites do not suck blood, they cause inflammation on the skin. Autumn mites are mainly found in places where the skin is very thin, for example between the claws. Pet owners may therefore find that their cat bites and licks itself particularly hard there. With the help of a flea comb you can detect the little animals, after combing the coat simply tap the comb over a white, moistened cloth, you should then see orange-red spots.

Treatment

If grass mites are found in the cat, the owner of the animal must be careful, because they can also pass on to humans. A special mite preparation is used for treatment, which is available as an ointment, powder, spot-on or shampoo. Even in case of an infestation with autumn mites, the environment should be cleaned thoroughly so that other roommates are not infected and a new infection does not occur later.

View grass mite remedies at Amazon*

Predatory mites

The predatory mites develop on the cat from one stage to the next. Female mites attach the eggs, which are enclosed in a cocoon, to the hair. After larvae have hatched from the eggs, the predatory mite is attacked after a maximum of four weeks. The mites feed mainly on the skin scales, only sometimes they take some tissue after a puncture of the skin.

Symptoms

Preferably the predatory mites infest the back and the head of the cat. Especially young cats are often very strongly attacked, and skin changes are often visible on the croup. The animals scratch themselves extremely, moreover the skin also begins to flake, and often crusts and eczema form.

Treatment

Humans are rarely attacked by predatory mites. If the veterinarian has made an appropriate diagnosis, then, as with all other mite species, treatment is usually carried out with special preparations. Also in this case, careful cleaning of the surroundings is important, especially cushions, scratching posts and blankets must be cleaned thoroughly to prevent a new infestation. After about three weeks a second treatment should be carried out, because only then it is guaranteed that really all mites have been killed.

Root mites

The mange mites are extremely tiny and cause mange in cats. In our latitudes, however, an infestation rarely occurs; usually only old or weak animals are affected. The transmission takes place from one animal to the other, but no fur contact must have been present. The mange mites are preferably found on the head of the animal, normally they do not spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms

The parasites cause severe itching in two different ways, firstly by crawling on the skin, and secondly, the saliva and faeces of the mites can also trigger allergies. Pet owners will quickly notice increased licking and scratching, possibly the cat will also lose hair and have a reddened and encrusted skin.

Treatment

In any case, a veterinarian must be consulted immediately if there is any suspicion of predatory mites. If there is indeed an infestation, the veterinarian will initiate the usual treatment for mites.

Hair follicle mites

Hair follicle mites are fortunately rarely found in cats, usually young cats are only infected by extreme proximity to their mother. These parasites also concentrate the hair follicles, they live quasi under the skin surface, so that you cannot see them on the animal’s body. Usually only a local infestation occurs, only if an animal is sick and weak, the little animals spread to the whole body.

Symptoms and treatment

Unlike all other mite species, the hair follicle mites do not cause itching. However, changes in the skin are noticeable after some time, the skin is reddened and scaly. Sometimes there is also increased hair loss, and pustules or ulcers may develop. In case of suspicion, the veterinarian will take a skin scraping to detect the hair follicle mites. If it is such an infestation, special mite preparations are available for treatment.

Among the most common pests on plants are mites, whereby a basic distinction is made between two species, namely spider mites and gall mites. Gall mites are mainly found on woody plants and cause proliferations there. Normally the plant is not affected by the infestation, so that control is only necessary in the rarest of cases, but spider mites should be avoided at all costs so that the plant does not suffer major damage.

Gall mites have a maximum size of 0.2 mm and their saliva leads to furry coatings on the leaves, deformed buds, pox or the typical gall. Spider mites can grow up to 1 mm in size and, as the name suggests, they spin various parts of the plant. Since only spider mites have to be controlled, this article will deal exclusively with this mite species.

Detecting infestation by spider mites in plants

If spider mites have settled on a plant, they prefer to live on the underside of the leaves. Their mouthparts are bristles which they use to penetrate the plant tissue and suck out the sugar-enriched sap. Air collects in the tapped cells, so that the infestation can initially be recognized by bright spots on the upper side of the leaves. As the process progresses, they enlarge and, under certain circumstances, merge to form an area.

As the leaves are injured, more evaporation takes place and as a result they often turn yellow and dry out. Often the leaves fall off prematurely. If the infestation by spider mites is very strong, white webs on leaves and shoots can be seen at some point. These webs are supposed to protect the little animals, so you can see a clear relationship to the spiders. However, not every type of spider mite forms such webs; this is usually only the case with the common spider mite, but not at all with the fruit tree spider mite.

Spider mites reproduce at breakneck speed

In April and May, yellowish or reddish eggs are laid on the underside of the leaves, from which the mite larvae later emerge. Multiplication progresses extremely quickly when temperatures are high and humidity is low. As a new generation is produced every 14 days at the latest, which is then already sexually mature, masses of spider mites are quickly formed. If the climatic conditions are ideal, there are eight to nine generations a year. Female spider mites can lay up to 120 eggs, so there is no need to wonder about huge populations. The plant is virtually sucked out, growth stalls until it eventually dries up completely.

The so-called red winter females of the common spider mite group themselves on the dried leaves and can hibernate on them. Sometimes they also hide in holes in the ground or seek shelter under scaly tree bark. If plants are infested in the greenhouse, cracks are an excellent shelter. The fruit tree spider mite handles this somewhat differently, because in autumn it lays its eggs on the bark of the affected shoots. As the quantity of eggs is enormous, the clutch of eggs can often be recognised from afar by its red shimmer.

Prevent spider mites properly

It is best for the plants if there is no infestation by spider mites in the first place, so prevention is an important issue. First of all, it is important that the plants have enough moisture, so they need enough water regularly. A layer of mulch has proven to be a good way of ensuring that the moisture remains in the soil for longer. If it is extremely hot and dry in the summer months, the plants should be sprayed with water. This limits the activity of the arachnids somewhat, as they cannot tolerate high humidity. Especially in closed rooms, or even in the greenhouse, this is a measure that is easy to carry out.

Spider mites are particularly likely to attack weak plants if they lack nutrients. Good fertilization, which takes potassium into account, can strengthen the plants, because the tissue becomes firmer. Nitrogen, on the other hand, should not be administered, because it tends to soften the tissue. In an ideal location, plants have enough air and light, so frequent ventilation is necessary in the greenhouse.

How to effectively control spider mites

In order to take action against the spider mites, the infestation must of course first be reliably determined. It is important to start the control as early as possible, so that the little animals cannot multiply so much in the first place. As they are hardly visible to the naked eye, the underside of the leaves should be examined with a magnifying glass. The webs can be seen when

How to effectively control spider mites

It is important to start the control as early as possible, so that the little animals cannot multiply so much in the first place. As they are hardly visible to the naked eye, the underside of the leaves should be examined with a magnifying glass. You can see the webs when you spray the plant with water.

Shower off

If the plant is only minimally infested, it is often sufficient to rinse it with a sharp jet of water; indoor plants are placed in the shower or bathtub for this purpose. The spraying should now be done every few days, maybe everything is already over by then. Another possibility is to remove the infested parts of the plant, this is another way to contain the spread. All fallen leaves, such as weeds, should be removed from the area around the plant, as the mites could hibernate there. Please dispose of it with household waste and not with compost!

Predatory mites against spider mites

Spider mites can also be controlled biologically, for this purpose special predatory mites are needed, the effect is most effective in the greenhouse. Predatory mites eat eggs, larvae and the adult mites equally, so mass reproduction is reliably prevented. However, this measure requires the climate to be right for the predatory mites, i.e. an air humidity of 75 percent and a temperature of 25 degrees. In this case too, control should be started as early as possible; the use of predatory mites is also useful as a preventive measure.

Insecticide against spider mites

If none of these natural measures bear fruit, you have to buy appropriate plant protection products in specialist shops. In the case of chemical control, the underside of the leaves must also be treated, and several treatments may be necessary. Ideally, you should only use preparations that are gentle on beneficial organisms, otherwise valuable opponents will be destroyed. Good pesticides would be those based on rapeseed oil or potash soap, for houseplants pesticide sticks are the appropriate means. However, chemical preparations should not be used too often, as resistance often develops, so that the agents become ineffective over time.

Vermin in bed – there’s hardly anything more disgusting. Within your own four walls you would like to feel as comfortable as possible. This is especially true for the bed. This is where we stay when we are tired and want to relax. The thought of crawling vermin, however, barely makes our eyes close. Most people do not even know that the smallest creatures are in our beds day after day. Mites and house dust mites also leave behind their dirt, to which many people react allergically.

Here are the five most interesting facts including helpful links to the sleeping chamber and vermin:

Each person swallows 50 spiders in a lifetime?

The rumour persists that each person swallows around 50 spiders in the course of his or her life. Some people find spiders fascinating, but a large proportion suffer from a real arachnophobia or at least do not want to have them in their own bed. But the numbers that circulate are not stable. Experts suggest that swallowing a spider is actually an unlikely event. People rarely sleep with their mouths open and the natural reflex when something falls into the mouth is more likely to be spitting rather than swallowing.

Source: http://www.zeit.de/2015/47/spinnen-schlucken-schlaf-stimmts

Mites and mite faeces in bed

Up to 2 million mites can romp around in one bed. Incredible numbers. But mites and mite faeces in bed have long been proven. The less you pay attention to hygiene, the more mites and mite excrement you will find in your own bed. They are among the most common parasites that infest our homes. Among other things, mite-proof covers and regular cleaning help here. Airing is also important in this case!

Mosquitoes in the bedroom: they even survive the winter

Especially in summer they are unfortunately a part of it: The mosquitoes. But not only outside, but especially where people are, they like to romp around, because they are blood-sucking parasites. Even a very cold winter does little harm to the mosquitoes. They love cool and humid places the most, that is where they retreat. Precipitation and warm temperatures in spring favour the development of the eggs into adult mosquitoes, which then survive much longer even in such conditions.

When you wake up with a bite

Bites can come from a wide variety of plagues. However, the fact is that mosquito bites are the most common, and flea and bug bites can also be a possibility. The latter two parasites are somewhat more difficult to control. Fleas are usually dragged into the apartment by pets. So if you have pets and wake up in the morning with bites, you should investigate this. Bedbugs are often dragged in from abroad, for example with old furniture.

Bedbugs, the bed pests

It is not uncommon for bedbugs to be brought from a hotel abroad to your own home. Such animals are very sophisticated and must be fought where they are found. It is also important to prevent bedbugs from spreading and multiplying. Mattresses and covers and also the whole environment must be vacuumed and hot washed. Bedbug infestation can be recognized by the stings and skin residue as well as faeces or bedbug eggs. There are many more countermeasures.

In India the neem tree is called the bountiful tree (Azad Darakhti Hindi). It originally comes from Burma (it is estimated that it has been there for 40-50 million years) and then spread, mainly through targeted planting / reforestation, also in Africa, America and the Caribbean.

The Niembaum flowers from January to the end of April and gets by with very little water per year (about 400 ml). However, the tree does not like humidity and frost either.

The positive properties of the leaves, bark and oils can be used for many things. Neem oil is also very effective against mites.

Mite sprays in mattresses for children?

House dust mites, or bed mites, often trigger a mite allergy. They do not stop at babies and children. If the child already has a runny nose in the morning, sneezes and/or has a cough that gets better during the day, then a bed mite allergy may be present.

The uninvited guests feed on human skin scales, among other things. Since they love high humidity and also like warm temperatures from 25 °C upwards, they are found in mattresses in extraordinarily large numbers. The mites do not even stop at baby mattresses or children’s mattresses.

Covers for the mattress

Of course, you can use special protective covers that are so finely woven that they do not let allergens through. This prevents the mites from being able to feed on human skin scales. The disadvantage is that the dead mites and the mite excrement remain in the mattress if it has not already been covered with a brand new cover.

Neem oil against mites

There are various sprays and oils on the market as a further means of fighting mites, which are produced from the seeds of the Indian neem tree.

Products from the Neem tree, as well as the corresponding oil, contain hundreds of active ingredients, some of which have not yet been properly researched.

However, one of the researched substances is particularly interesting. This substance is called azadirachtin and is used for mite sprays and oils, as this substance acts directly against the mites. Mites that ingest this substance during feeding become unable to reproduce. The active ingredient azadirachtin interferes with the synthesis of chitin by the mites. Without chitin, the larva cannot skin and pupate and dies.

Neem oil therefore prevents the mites from reproducing !

Disadvantages of neem oil

Unfortunately, oil is not a miracle weapon against dust mites either. The following things you have to know about Neem oil:

Neem oil does not smell pleasant the excrements (faeces) of the mites remain in the mattress as allergy trigger

Neem oil does not penetrate to the middle of the mattress

many people react allergic to the ingredients

the application has to be repeated every three months

Conclusion on neem oil

The anti-mite remedy “Neem oil” is not a miracle cure and does not remove house dust mites. Before using it, it is important to check whether the person sleeping on the mattress is allergic to the Neem spray or oil.

Especially for children and babies, we do not recommend the use of Neem Oil products because of the almost 100 different substances that are often contained in Neem Oil products. It is better to use the many alternatives, such as mattress covers (encasings) and air purifiers.

However, Neem Oil is definitely justified as an additional remedy for mites in adults.

Sneezing, coughing, burning eyes

As with other allergies, the symptoms of a house dust allergy vary from person to person. While some people only have mild symptoms, others often struggle with real health problems.

The mild symptoms include reddened and itchy eyes, a runny nose or even violent sneezing fits. By the way, these symptoms occur especially in the morning, immediately after waking up. Why this is so, you can read below.

Severe symptoms like asthma and shortness of breath

An untreated house dust allergy can cause a so-called floor change. This is a big problem, because it means that the allergy spreads from the head area (eyes and nose) to the respiratory tract and the bronchi. The affected house dust allergy sufferer then suffers from shortness of breath, asthma and bronchial cough. Strong sputum often occurs, also especially in the morning.

The fight against the cause is difficult

As you can read in this article about house dust allergy, house dust mites and their excrements are the cause of the corresponding allergy. The allergy sufferer reacts allergic to the house dust mites, but also to the mites’ faeces to the highest degree. This combines with the house dust when it dries and decomposes. These fine dust particles, which now contain the protein of the faeces, are inhaled by every person in the household. While normal, healthy people do not react allergic to them, the house dust allergy sufferer reacts immediately to the proteins.

Home remedies and medicines

Especially people who only show slight symptoms of a house dust allergy could rely on natural remedies and old household remedies. A number of remedies are good for allergies and relieve the symptoms.

Nettle

You can make a tea from fresh nettle leaves. On the one hand, this is very good for preventing allergic reactions, on the other hand, symptoms such as irritated mucous membranes or itching can be relieved.

Sea salt

A bath in sea salt, preferably from the Dead Sea, relieves itching and rashes. Appropriate baths are now available in almost every drugstore and in many pharmacies. You can also buy sea salt for such baths over the Internet (see below).

Eyebright herb

Eyebright herb can be used to make a wonderful tea that helps against itching and red eyes. Simply let the tea cool down and soak a cotton pad with it. Carefully place it on the eyes and dab around the eyes. Eyebright herb is a real relief for itchy eyes. By the way, eyebright herb is also available as finished eye drops and is then known as Euphrasia.

Butterbur

The butterbur is no longer so well-known in Germany. However, it is able to relieve cramps in the respiratory tract. It is also used very successfully against hay fever. So if you are allergic to house dust and suffer from shortness of breath or asthma, butterbur may be suitable for you. Butterbur is available as capsules on the Internet or from your pharmacy.

Inhalation

To clear the nose and also to flush the allergens out of the nose, it can make sense to inhale once or twice a day. We recommend inhaling at least once a day before going to bed. Look around in drugstores or pharmacies. There are many inhalers that will help. For example pinimenthol or Japan oil.

Drugs Antihistamines

Allergy sufferers who need a stronger remedy for the agonizing itching and allergy can take an antihistamine. These are freely available and can be bought in online pharmacies. As these often have first-class offers especially for new customers, we recommend this website for price comparison.

Nasal sprays

In the meantime, there are not only nasal sprays that merely reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa, but also agents with active ingredients against inflammatory reactions. These agents are related to cortisone and help very well. Unfortunately they are not suitable for a longer period of time. For a short period of time, however, they help very well and you should use them calmly if you suffer extremely again.

Mite infestation in budgerigars often has serious consequences, because many owners first overlook and then underestimate the disease. We inform about mites in budgies.

What are mites?

Mites are small parasites that live undetected in the bird’s skin. They lay their eggs there and reproduce. Often these mites have been on the bird for years without showing symptoms. The mite infection often only breaks out due to another factor, such as illness, high stress, weakness or lack of hygiene.

Due to the fact that mites can also live undetected on the bird, it is necessary to introduce every new bird to an ornithological vet before letting it join the flock or partner (the individual action of a budgie is automatically prohibited).

Identifying mites

Mites can be recognized by changes on the bird’s beak horn. These are caused by the holes (mite ducts) that the mites bore into the beak. Already now the bird should be presented to a veterinarian at the latest.

As the disease progresses, the beak changes more and more. Growths and holes develop. This can lead to the loss of the beak.

Likewise one can recognize the mites everywhere, where no feathers grow. So for example at the feet and at the sewer, as well as at the eyes.

Treating mites with budgerigars

Under no circumstances should mites be treated themselves. The old household remedies, such as dabbing with petroleum, have long been advised against.

Mite sprays from the specialist trade are often not healthy for the birds. They can damage the birds’ small and sensitive lungs.

A budgie with mites should always(!) be treated by an ornithological vet

.

Supporting measures

To support a mite infection you should pay attention to special hygiene of the cage and the toy. Everything should be disinfected daily. You should not use sprays or disinfectants from the trade. These often leave behind residues.

A disinfection with pure alcohol (please only from the pharmacy) is possible, as this does not leave any residues.

Furthermore, scrub all objects with a nail brush and leave everything in boiling hot water for a few minutes.

Wooden toys can also be heated briefly to 100-120 °C in the oven, which will safely kill the mites.

Apart from the bedroom, where you normally spend 6-8 hours a day, the living room is probably the room that you cannot and do not want to do without during the day and in the evening. Usually several hours are spent here every day. Often at the TV or in a sociable round. Depending on the furnishings and atmosphere of the living room, this room can also be a place of relaxation and retreat.

Due to the fact that the living room is the centre of your life and the many hours spent there, it is important that you have a pleasant climate there.

For most people, the living room should provide a cosy atmosphere and warm temperatures, especially in winter, which is why it is not unusual for the heating to run at full speed.

The warm and dry room air then creates a room climate that dries out the mucous membranes. This is often noticed by dry and burning eyes.

Particularly in winter, it is therefore important to ensure not only sufficient oxygen content in the living room, but also a decent level of humidity. Since the air dries out during the day, you should help with a humidifier, as you can read on this page.

Requirements for humidifiers

In the humidifier test on the linked page, both the general properties and the requirements of the respective rooms are discussed. Especially in the evening hours it is important that the room air has a high quality. Already tired from everyday life, the eyes often start to burn and itch even faster.

Especially in the living room, however, the noise level should remain low. No matter whether you are talking to friends / family, reading a book or watching TV – a disturbing background noise is not desired. Therefore, it is advisable that you deal with the different technologies and thus find the model that meets your requirements. In addition to the different techniques of increasing humidity, models with other features are also available. These are variable according to personal ideas and directly determine the budget that can be spent on a humidifier.

Very simple models are offered starting at 30 Euro. Depending on the room temperature, the tendency here is towards an evaporator or an atomizer. If a small, additional heat source is not a problem, an evaporator may also be appropriate for you. Other requirements for humidifiers are maintenance and cleaning. The more extensive these requirements are, the less the device in question can be described as suitable for everyday use. After all, nobody really wants to service such a device on a daily basis.

Selecting the optimum location

There are many reasons to choose a particular humidifier. Nevertheless, general and personal requirements must always be taken into account. Depending on the living room and model, the ideal location may look different. For example, make sure that the air coming out of the unit is not directed directly towards the couch. Otherwise, there is a risk of colds and a “stiff neck”.

With a good appliance, the noise level should be adjustable. In most cases, the change in noise level is caused by the change in power level. It is therefore particularly important to choose a device that is still sufficiently quiet even at higher power levels and is therefore suitable for use in the living room from the ground up.

Conclusion

Especially people with health problems should inform themselves about the possibilities of a humidifier. Air enriched with moisture can often support recovery. It is important to take your time when choosing a humidifier and to consider the different types. This is the only way to find the ideal device for your living room.

One final tip: By airing the unit briefly and regularly, you can also reenrich the used air with oxygen.

The endocannabinoids are produced by the human body itself. This fact has been known since the 1990s. Little research has been done on what they are used for. Laboratory experiments on mice have shown that the body’s own cannabis-like messenger substances have the anti-inflammatory effect. CBD is therefore becoming more and more known and popular these days. The cannabis-like messenger substances dock to the body exactly where THC docks as an active ingredient in cannabis. The defence reactions of the skin can be regulated with the cannabinoid docking sites. The CBD in marijuana is also its cannabinoid.

What is important for the body with CBD?

For the production of cannabis oil the hemp seeds are an important raw material. In experiments with animals, it was found that nickel allergies are shown when the cannabinoid docking sites are missing. The messenger substances were so often not recognized. If animals have the increased endocannabinoid level, they fight less often with the skin allergy. If the THC solution was brushed directly onto the skin in the animals, then there were fewer symptoms of the allergy.

The scientists therefore produced cannabis ointments, which are used for allergic eczema and for the treatment of contact allergies. Since the dosage of CBD is low, the intoxicating effect is not to be expected. CBD in cannabis oil is therefore effective for skin eczema and this is very good news for many people affected. In principle, this is not a new finding, because such an ointment was already available in pharmacies in the 1930s.

Cannabis extracts have been known for their healing effects for many centuries. One example is the anti-inflammatory effect. The ointment had disappeared from the shelves again, which was due to the ban on marijuana and also to the intoxicating effect of THC (source: https://hanfverband.de/inhalte/cannabis-wirkung-nebenwirkungen-und-risiken). Nowadays, patients fight for cannabis to become medicinal again.

Important information about cannabis

According to studies, cannabis is not only effective against skin eczema, but also stimulates the appetite. This is important for anorexic patients, AIDS patients or patients undergoing chemotherapy. CBD is also effective against allergies and this in the form of liquid, drops or oil. Although the effect of CBD has not been fully researched, it is hoped that it will have pleasing effects. The mechanism of action of cannabidiol has already been described in the literature.

Compared to THC, CBD does not have a psychoactive effect and thus does not cause a change in consciousness. The effect of THC has nothing to do with the state of intoxication. With CBD the effects promise a multiple therapeutic benefit. CBD or also cannabidiol is not yet completely transparent regarding its effects. The current state of knowledge only allows conclusions about possible areas of application. Cannabis could, however, help with various ailments and diseases and these are AIDS, drug addiction, skin diseases, ADHD, autism, asthma, arthritis, arteriosclerosis, anxiety, dementia, multiple sclerosis and pathological stress.

Also possible for CBD is the fight against cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma, firomyalgia, epilepsy, diabetes, depression, Crohn’s disease, cancer and bipolar disorder. Pious must be mentioned BSE, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, obesity, motion sickness and migraine.
